WIA Not RTD: The Real Casualty

Synopsis:
This term “casualty“ has become synonymous with KIA, (Killed in Action) in its misrepresentations and lack of comprehension in American and worldwide media outlets. Primary focus is to sensationalize headlines and produce the largest footprint in the market. Thus leaving behind a large population of veterans who have valiantly served, to be tucked away and often forgotten. Covered throughout this briefing is an attempt to portray a specific classification of “casualty“ in understanding its long-term ramifications.

Definition of “Casualty” from DOD Dictionary of Military Terms

casualty
(DOD) Any person who is lost to the organization by having been declared dead, duty status - whereabouts unknown, missing, ill, or injured. See also casualty category; casualty status; casualty type; duty status - whereabouts unknown; hostile casualty; nonhostile casualty.

What is WIA Not RTD?

Specifically, WIA (Wounded in Action) is a casualty status given to an individual soldier who has been injured while engaged in a combat situation. An additional status of Not RTD, denotes critical or permanently disabled in the soldier’s ability to continue serving in theatre (active duty).
